This two-day workshop with give attendees confidence in identifying and treating cases of carpal and tarsal derangement within their own practice. They will develop decision making skills to help ascertain when arthrodesis is appropriate and learn how to manage possible complications.
In the morning lectures, participants will gain confidence identifying cases they can treat themselves versus those that should be referred for “someone else’s headache”. In the afternoon, attendees will have the opportunity to practice performing arthrodesis on cadavers.
- Learn the fundamentals of performing arthrodesis, including joint preparation, grafting and fixation techniques
- Develop key decision-making skills including where arthrodesis is preferable to joint reconstruction, identifying high risk factors, avoidance and management of complications
- Discover ways to differentiate those cases where partial rather than pan-joint arthrodesis can be used to maintain more normal function

Dan graduated as a vet from the University of Sydney in 2002. He is both the son of a vet and married to one. After graduation, he worked in mixed and small animal practice in New Zealand, several Australian states and the United Kingdom before coming home to Sydney and beginning the pathway to specialisation.
Daniel undertook a surgical internship at the Veterinary Specialist Centre and a residency at the Small Animal Specialist Hospital (SASH), where he continues to practise as a specialist surgeon.
Dan is an orthopod by nature, with specific clinical interests in fracture management and joint replacement. He also has research interests in the emerging field of biofabrication (3D printing body parts).

Ricky has more than a decade’s experience in specialist referral practice. He specialises in arthroscopy, arthroplasty, fracture traumatology, angular limb deformity correction, joint replacement & joint resurfacing.
Following graduation from the University of Melbourne (2005), Ricky completed a clinical training scholarship at the University of Cambridge (UK), surgical internship at the Veterinary Specialist Centre and surgical residency at the Small Animal Specialist Hospital in Sydney (2010-2013). Ricky also completed additional training at Murdoch University, Sydney University, University of California, and Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists.
Ricky is a Fellow of the Australian New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Small Animal Surgery and a Registered Small Animal Surgical Specialist. He has published and presented around the world, with a strong and active interest in clinical and biomechanical research relating to the canine hip, stifle and spine. Ricky is a past recipient of the prestigious VOS Wade O Brinker Orthopaedic Resident Research Award (presented WVOC, Colorado 2014) and also the Geoff Robbins ANZCVS Research Award twice as a co-investigator (2016 & 2018). Ricky is an examiner for the ANZCVS small animal surgical chapter and reviewer of two international journals.
Ricky thoroughly enjoys all aspects of teaching, having taught at many workshops and conferences both nationally and internationally while continuing to mentor a large number of residents and interns over the years. When not working, Ricky will be surfing, fishing, travelling and preferably all three combined.
