This is a course that will involve theory and practice, and is developed for veterinarians that want to improve the quality of their anaesthesia and pain management protocols through the implementation of local anaesthesia techniques suited for procedures commonly performed in general practice.
Firstly, we will cover the pharmacology of local anaesthetics, as well as the anatomy and theory of some local-regional techniques. Our cadaver-based practical session will provide the opportunity for safely practicing the skills and techniques discussed.

Dr Joana Aurora Braun Chagas
BVSc, DACVAA

Joana Chagas is a veterinary anaesthesia specialist based at Veterinary Specialists Aotearoa. She graduated from University of State of Santa Catarina in 2008, and after spending some time in general practice, decided to pursue her dream to become an anaesthesia specialist. She has completed post-graduate training in Brazil, as well as an anaesthesia-oriented internship and residency in veterinary anaesthesia at University of Pennsylvania (UPenn). Joana became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia in 2019.
Joana has dedicated her time to veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia since the early years of vet school and was a senior lecturer at Massey University for five years before joining the team at VSA. She is very passionate about all things related to anaesthesia and teaching, and a huge enthusiast of the feline species (her own cats, Waffles, Sarah and Albert, as well as her patients).
