Description
This highly practical two-day course is designed to improve your understanding of fracture mechanics and bone healing. This workshop will focus on classification and assessment of fractures, decision making for fracture planning and the practical surgical skills needed to confidently treat common long bone fractures in practice using locking plates. Both days will include seminars and hands-on cadaver practice.

At the end of this workshop, delegates should be able to:
- Assess and classify long bone fractures to make an appropriate treatment plan
- Understand the theory and practical application of locking plates
- Understand and apply principles relating to bone healing and fracture biomechanics.
- Be confident with surgical approaches to common long bone fractures
- Know how to approach common long bone fracture configurations using bone plates, intramedullary pins, k-wires and cerclage wire
- Know how to avoid and manage complications
Speaker Biography
Gordon Corfield
BVSc (hons) FANZCVS
Gordon Corfield graduated in 1996 from the University of Queensland. He started out in dairy practice in Victoria before moving to small animal practice in 1998, working in Brisbane, England and Sydney. He commenced his residency in small animal surgery at Murdoch University in Perth in 2003 completing it in 2005, then moving to Rivergum Referral Services. He was awarded his Fellowship in small animal surgery and became a registered specialist 2008. In 2008 he moved back to the Gold Coast and has been working at Veterinary Specialist Services ever since. He became a Director of VSS in 2013. Gordon was the head of the small animal surgery subject examination and standards committees for the last 7 years.
Gordon is passionate about providing quality medical care for our pets and promoting a team based approach to veterinary medicine. “Advances in surgical and medical techniques and procedures is facilitating more options and speedier and more complete recoveries for our pets. This is a very exciting time to be in our profession.” Gordon actively promosted the VSS ‘hip clinic’ and believes, as shown in people, that hip replacements result in a dramatic improvement in function and quality of life for the appropriate candidates. Orthopaedic and spinal surgery are a particular passion for Gordon, however he enjoys all aspects of small animal surgery and a very busy case load.
